Samsung's Answer To iPhone 12 Pro's Pro Motion Display
Ross Young, CEO and founder of Display SupplyChain Consultants is back again with some great Galaxy Note 20 news where he's detailingthe display specs of both the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Plus and explaininghow Samsung is going a step ahead of Apple in the display department in 2020. First up there will be two Galaxy Note 20variants this year, the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+.
The display specs of Note 20 include a 6.42"display which is a slight increase from 6.3" of Note 10 last year. The resolution will still be at 1080p Plus, though with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Coming to the Galaxy Note 20 Plus, it willhave a 6.87" display, a slight increase of .07" from last year.
It will have a Quad HD+ resolution with apixel per inch of 497. The aspect ratio is a bit wider than the Note20 at 19.3:9. It's the first time ever I guess a GalaxyS phone in a particular year is bigger than the Galaxy Note phone of that year. The Galaxy S20 Ultra measures at 6.9", they'realmost the same size to be fair but still, I thought it's something you should know. Anyway, Ross Young confirmed again that theGalaxy Note 20+ will indeed support 120Hz at Quad HD+ resolution just like we discusseda couple of days ago.
That's great news indeed but here's wherethe Galaxy Note 20 family will have an upper hand this year on the iPhone 12 Pro models. Ross says both the Galaxy Note 20 models willhave LTPO display technology. I've explained this in my previous Note 20video. LTPO stands for low-temperature polycrystallineoxide display. The technology will feature a low-power backplaneand it will be able to turn off individual pixels depending on the various colors displayingon the screen.
LTPO displays should be able to use up to15 to 20 percent less power than LTPS, or low-temperature polysilicon, which is thedisplay Samsung and everyone currently use in their smartphones. Ross explains that the LTPO can vary the refreshrate from 1Hz to 120Hz. 1Hz for always-on display and up to 120Hzfor the gaming experience.
It's a huge advantage for Samsung as Applewill not feature LTPO displays up until next year. By the way, we've seen variable refresh ratedisplays on phones like Pixel 4 and OnePlus 7 Pro and the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro willalso have a dynamic OLED screen but the difference is they use LTPS display and the refresh rateadjusts between 60Hz and 120Hz. Whereas with the LTPO display on the Note20, the refresh rate can vary from 1Hz to 120Hz thereby the display will be able toautomatically adjust the refresh rate for apps that support high refresh rates and thosethat don’t, thereby saving on battery life.
Anyway, the presence of LTPO tech on the GalaxyNote 20 will give Samsung an edge over the competition and give will enable customersto enjoy stuff like media consumption without having to plug in their devices frequently. Also Ross Young just confirmed that therewon't be an Ultra variant in the Note 20 family.
Note 20 and Note 20+ are the only two variantsthis year but interestingly he says the Galaxy Fold 2 will be the Ultra model this year whichmakes sense considering how the Fold 2 will have built-in S-Pen support and at this point,I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung will name it the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra instead of theGalaxy Fold 2. I guess it's their strategy of slowly transitioningthe Note lineup into the foldable lineup with the S-Pen support. By the way, this doesn't mean that there won'tbe 100x zoom on the Note 20+.
I'm guessing they are only dropping the Ultramoniker for the Note 20, the camera should remain the same as the S20 Ultra. Anyway, let me know what do you think aboutthis down in the comments and as always I'll see you tomorrow...Peace out!
